So, were you blown away by the golf at the 91st PGA Championship at Hazeltine this weekend? With 8 hours of TV coverage on Saturday and again on Sunday, I was just riveted to the screen and amazed by both the spectacle and the windy golf conditions. The TV commentators also contributed to the windy feeling with all their hot air and false hopes for a certain golfer named Tiger Woods. Didn’t they just love Y.E. Yang’s quote about how the odds against him beating Tiger must be 70 to 1, based on Tiger having just won his 70th PGA Tour event last week while he had won his first earlier this year.

Although I’ve never played there personally, I vividly remember Tony Jacklin telling me, and our other two playing partners at Brookmans Park Golf Club, all about Hazeltine’s challenges, just a week or so after his US Open win back there 1970. The course certainly seems to have got even harder and so more picturesque since Dave Hill’s scathing comment back then that “all it really lacks is 80 acres of corn and a few cows.”

Anyway, there I was watching the golf and really looking forward to the cut and thrust of another battle between Tiger Woods and Padraig Harrington over the weekend, with Padraig seemingly putting his demons from Firestone behind him and in the past. I was also hoping to see some heroics from the many contenders from Europe and to see a real return to form from the likes of Ernie Els and Vijay Singh. Given all the excitement, I almost forgot to watch out for all the golf psychology lessons that were blowing across the screen.

Now I’m sure that you watched most if not all of the weekend’s cut and thrust on TV or, if you’re really lucky, you were there in Minnesota to watch it for real. So I’m focussing here on the golf psychology of all that windy golf, windy golfers and, in my next article, all that windy putting from the likes of Lee Westwood, Vijay Singh, Ernie Els and many others.

Now I don’t want to take anything away from Y E Yang and his outstanding performance this week. It takes something really special to beat Tiger Woods from 2 shots behind on the final day in a major. It’s also worth noting that his final 2-under par 70 tied the low score of the day with just 2 other players. Having said all of that, what happened to Tiger?

Well I think I noticed the first real flaw that I’ve seen in Tiger’s amazingly strong mental game. It’s been staring me in the face for some time now, especially with his occasional bad results in the Open Championship. The problem is with the parts of golf he can’t control and, more importantly, predict. Here at Hazeltine, as so often at Open Championship venues, the players are faced with the uncertainty of a strong and swirling wind. The wind at the tee is blowing one way, the clouds are moving in another and the flag on the green is fluttering in yet another. Tiger can’t predict what will happen to his ball and, unlike his wonderful ball-striking, it’s out of his control. That’s what he doesn’t seem able to handle.

I was taken by the contrast between Tiger’s reaction to two particular shots during his last 9 holes on Sunday. Both were unlucky and neither resulted from a bad shot execution, but one really upset him and the other he accepted philosophically. The first shot was a flier hit with a six iron that flew way over the back of the green on one of the many long par 4s. You could tell that he was half expecting it as he quickly acknowledged what had happened and quietly and confidently played the next shot. His reaction suggested that he hadn’t accepted it as a bad shot, just an unlucky one.

The second one was his tee shot on the tough short 17th where he backed away several times as the wind swirled and changed direction. He looked panicked and more like a rabbit in the headlights than a tiger. Nevertheless, he used his golf psychology training and hit what looked, and probably felt, like a really good shot. The ball sailed over the flag and landed no more than a foot too long and nestled down in the rough. A foot shorter and it would probably have spun back towards the hole. Tiger almost collapsed and still didn’t appear his normal confident and resourceful self as he chipped out short from a difficult lie and missed the putt. It must be remembered that Tiger didn’t capitulate totally and Yang hit one of the best shots I’ve ever seen into the 18th green to close out his victory.

So what do I think was the real difference between those two shots of Tiger’s? Well, he seemed to accept the flier as just plain bad luck that could happen to anyone and he just got on with the short without hesitation – it was out of his control and he accepted it. However, he didn’t seem to accept the swirling wind in the same way and hesitated several times. For a golfer with such supreme ball control and the ball on a tee, he didn’t seem able to accept the possibility of plain bad luck. I recorded the final days play and watching it again I saw that same hesitation from Tiger on many of his shots, especially when he had a good lie.

So there’s a definite flaw in Tiger’s mental game when it comes to a variable or swirling wind. The bad news for everyone else is that once he recognises it, he has his own mental skills and the golf psychology skills of Jay Brunza to help him handle it.

- Just over five months ago, EA released Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 for Nintendo Wii. At the time of review, we thought it was odd, as EA usually followed the classic “Our games are one year ahead of reality” pattern, and Tiger Woods 07 was actually releasing in 07. Fear not Wii patron, EA hasn’t fallen behind, because it’s still 2007, and we’ve got a new Tiger Woods sitting on shelves. What can five months of development time do for a franchise that was missing so much the first time around …
Help answer the question about pga tour
What was the worst score in a stroke play PGA tour tournament a professional ever shot?
What was the worst score in a stroke play PGA tour tournament a professional ever shot?
David Duval, the former world No.1, has likely lost his PGA Tour Card for next year.

David Duval walked off the course on Friday, his trademark shades glaring, his smile still resonating after a year that showed much promise only to end in such disappointment.

The former world No. 1 has likely lost his PGA Tour card for next year after missing the cut at the Children’s Miracle Network Classic, finishing at 5-over par in the final event of the season at Disney World.

“It’s not a position you want to be in,” Duval said. “It’s not fun, but really, I haven’t been focusing on it a whole lot.”

Duval entered the week at No. 125 on the money list, the last spot to earn full status on tour. He is projected to finish at No. 131, giving him conditional status that would allow him to enter about a dozen tournaments for being in the top 150.

Duval’s name recognition should help him land sponsor exemptions. And his runner-up finish at the U.S. Open and his 2001 British Open championship will get him into the first three majors next year.

He said he has already signed up for qualifying school. If he doesn’t qualify, he’ll be making his schedule on a weekly basis next year.

“I’ve played long enough, I’d like to think the relationships I’ve built up for 14, 15 years out here, that the events I go to year in and year out would show me a little love if I need it,” he said.

It’s been a long fall from grace.

Minnesota is one of the world’s hottest destinations for golf courses, and this year it will be the host to the PGA Championship. Between the 13th and 16th of August 2009 Hazeltine Course, Chaska, Minnesota will be the home of the PGA Championship 2009.

Will Tiger Woods win this tournament? Well, at the moment he’s at position one on the leaderboards with; Hunter Mahan, Padraig Harrington, Robert Allenby and Matthew Goggin trailing behind (in that order).

One of the most popular vacation destinations within the Northern State of Minnesota is the Grand View Lodge. This multi-faceted resort is home to three golf courses. The Pine Golf Course added in 1990 and Preserve and Deacon’s Lodge which have quite recently followed suit.

The Pine Golf Course has been named the only five star golf course in the Minnesota state by popular golfing magazine – Golf Digest. I found this quite surprising considering the sheer number of great golf courses within Minnesota.

This will be the 91st anniversary of the PGA Championship since it began back in 1918. Hazeltine Golf Course has been the host of many world class and prestigious golfing tournaments including two United States Women’s Golfing Opens in 1966 and 1977, two United States Golfing Opens and a United States Senior Golfing Open in 1983. Due to the fact that Hazeltine is a private golf course it will mean that the average joe will be able to buy a ticket to watch the PGA Championship 2009.

After our exciting round at Mystic Dunes, it was only mid-afternoon on a gorgeous day with blue skies, so we decided to take a 10 minute drive and drop in on the Father Son Challenge at Champion’s Gate, which has been held for the last 3 years at this golf course in the South part of Orlando. You can’t miss Champion’s Gate, when you first get off exit 58 on the I-4, the impressive main entrance gates to Champion’s Gate are right there.

The Father Son Legend is truly a walking Hall of Fame of Golf, and it’s a celebration of the sport as well as of the bonds of family. Famous golf professionals of the present and the past play with their talented sons and daughters, and all of them share a passion for the game.

This year’s line-up included Jack and Jackie Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and his grandson Sam Saunders, Vijay Singh and 15 year old son Qass, Mark and Shaun O’Meara, Craig and Chris Stadler, Bob and David Charles, Raymond and Robert Floyd (Raymond has won the Father Son Challenge 5 times since 1994 together with his sons Robert and Raymond Jr.), Hale and Steve Irwin, Tom and David Kite, Bernard and 15 year old Stefan Langer, Davis Love III and his 12-year old son Dru, Johnny Miller and Johnny Miller II, Larry and Josh Nelson, Curtis and Tom Strange, Lee and Daniel Trevino, Fuzzy Zoeller and his daughter Gretchen.

We parked our car and approached the club house. Just as we were walking towards the stands on the 18th hole, Davis Love III had finished his round and was coming towards the club house. It is really an amazing experience, seeing all these world famous celebrities and icons of the sport, up so close and so relaxed in this unique tournament format.

The rules of playh are based on a Scramble Format, which means that on each hole, each player drives and the best drive is selected. Each player then plays a second shot from the spot where the selected drive lies, and the best second shot is selected. This process is completed uniti the hole is completed.

When we were there we also saw golf greats like Vijay Singh, Mark O’Meara and Lee Trevino finish their rounds. It was great seeing Vijay, relaxing after his final putt with a coffee in hand, awaiting the arrival of his son on the last hole and watching his son’s last putt of the day. Because this tournament pairs up the great players of golf with their sons or daughters, it really gives you a much better feeling of these professionals as human beings, and according to Allan Findley, General Manager of Champions Gate, many of these players truly relish this event, which allows them to celebrate their sport as a family away from the pressures of the PGA Tour.

We really enjoyed the atmosphere at the Father Son Challenge, and it would have been great to see some of the other legends of golf, like Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer, in person. Unfortunately we have an extremely tight schedule and will be unable to come back on a second day, but it was a great experience, getting a first person look at this “Walking Hall of Fame” of the game of golf.

Donna Bonn Designs is proud to introduce a unique and exciting golf clothing line that features fashion-forward concepts and utilizes eco-friendly fabric with a soft, stretchy feel. Before Donna Bonn Designs, women’s golf clothes offered only minor fashion accents at best. Their line takes it to the next level and incorporates current fashion trends. They have 3 unique collections that offer a wide range of fashion and prices which will appeal to any woman looking for a fashionable piece to wear on and off the golf course. All of our shirts feature a longer contemporary fit and use organic fabric.

In addition, the designs encompass figure flattering and stylish accents; such as, distressed screen printed graphics on our golf t-shirts, rhinestone zippers, slight collars, buttondown fronts, capped sleeves, long length and lace accents. With Donna Bonn Designs, prepare to be noticed!

Donna Bonn Designs is where ‘Play Meets Fashion.’
Donna has enjoyed creating ideas built around high fashion flair and outgoing personality while upholding to the high code of golf attire etiquette. Over that time, her creativity remained limited to traditional golf attire with a fit and style pattern geared after men’s golf clothing. The absence of stylish and athletic golf attire is no longer suitable for the fashion conscious woman golfer. Women desire options in golf clothing…most importantly a fit, feminine, and fashionable look while playing golf. Donna’s passion is to deliver exactly this mix to women’s golf wear. Whether advanced or novice, we want you to look and feel good while playing the sport you love.

Donna Bonn Designs brings a longer, well-fitting golf shirt to the market for the first time, where ‘play can truly meet fashion.’ We are also proud to introduce the first golf t-shirt to the world of women’s golf through our Taylor Collection. All of our collections are longer in length and have a snugger fit allowing the athlete flexibility without exposure. Many of her close friends on the LPGA golf tour express similar complaints. Donna has made it her mission to reach the market of women who want to wear beautiful golf clothing that is fashionable, feminine and comfortable to play in as well as attractive enough to wear off the course.

Donna Bonn (born Donna Lippstreu) comes from a vast golf background first as a player (national junior All- American and college golf at the University of Arizona), instructor, and now designer of golf apparel. She has always strived to be on the cutting edge of fashion. She brings a unique element to designing women’s golf clothes due to her golf experience and fashion eye. Both are necessary to bring a fashionable piece to the golf course so that it is not only stylish piece but also functionable while playing the game.

Donna Bonn Designs has brought fashion design and the sport of golf together! Until now, this product has not existed. The world of women’s golf wear will never be the same! Play Meets Fashion.

If you ask the players on the PGA Tour to name what they believe to be the most important golf fundamentals, there is no doubt that golf swing alignment would be towards the top of the list. However, most amateurs either do not know or do not admit how important golf swing alignment is to their success.

It is amazing how you always have certain things that stick with you that you have heard from your different instructors. On the topic of golf swing alignment, one of my old instructors used to say .You can have the biggest and boldest cannon and it does not mean anything to you if it is not aimed in the correct direction.. There are many sayings that I am sure that you have heard along these lines. Obviously, you can hit the perfect golf shot but if it is aimed 30 yards to the left of the target the results are not going to be to your liking.

Since golf swing alignment is a main fundamental to each and every golf shot, here are some simple exercises that you can quickly and easily do to check your golf swing alignment.

First, setup to a golf shot as you normally would and make sure you are comfortable. Now that you are ready to make your golf swing, place a tee directly behind each of your heels and push both tees all the way into the ground. Now move away from your setup and place a club.s shaft over both of the tees to create a straight line. Now, go behind your ball and look down the target line. Does it match what you thought?

This golf alignment exercise shows you exactly where you are aligning your feet. If your pictures do not match, then you can simply change or move the tees so they align correctly and then setup with the tees touching the back of your heels. If you were not aligned properly, do not be surprised that when you setup to your next shot with your heels properly placed that you will feel that you are aimed somewhere else. If your feet have been aligned incorrectly for a while, then it will feel quite strange when you do align them correctly. Keeping track of your alignment, your new feet position will become second nature in no time at all.

Another easy way to check your alignment is to assume your address position, remove your left hand from the club and simply point to a spot 10 yards to the left (for a right-handed golfer) of your target. Monitor where your arm and finger are pointing opposed to where your shoulders and hips are pointing. They should feel like they are creating a straight line. If you feel they are pointing to the left then you are prone to hit a push or a hook. If pointing to the right, you are prone to hit a pull or a slice.

As the PGA Tour players would agree, your golf swing alignment is one of the most important golf fundamentals for each golf shot that you take. You must check it often, because it’s very easy to align yourself incorrectly without even knowing it. That is why I would be surprised if you were on driving range at a PGA Tour stop and did not see several players with clubs on the ground to assist with their golf swing alignment. Now that you know exactly what you need to do to check your golf swing alignment, you should be hitting more golf shots at your target and lowering your scores.

Putting was clearly very difficult for all the players at Hazeltine in the 2009 PGA Championship, especially in terms of putting psychology. Now we all saw Tiger Woods missing a lot of mid-range putts that we’d normally expect him to see and I’ve already written about how those were the result of his uneasiness about the swirling wind. I’m more concerned here with a number of really crucial putts missed by Lee Westwood and the massive number of short putts missed by Vijay Singh.

In my humble opinion, Lee Westwood is striking the ball as well as he ever has, especially in the major championships. As a result, he keeps getting himself into contention in the last round before throwing away the opportunity in the last nine holes on Sunday. How many times did he miss apparently easy putts at Hazeltine, including a three putt from not much more than 3 feet? At the Open Championship we saw him three-putt the 72nd hole after recovering well from a few bad putts earlier in the round. The same sort of thing has plagued him for such a long time that it can’t just be coincidence and I keep reading about Lee working with golf psychologists, so it can’t be that; or can it?

Well, I’ve seen Lee’s name mentioned as a client of a number of high-profile golf psychologists here in the UK, like Dr Karl Morris and Jamil Qureshi, the official psychological performance coach for the European Ryder Cup team last year. I also noticed, in the Westwood Academy page on Lee’s website, that the list of sessions participants will receive includes psychology.

Imagine my surprise when I heard about Lee’s comments about golf psychologists in an interview at Hazeltine. “Look at them all,” he said, “They all look a bit odd, like they need to see somebody, I find it hard to take anybody like that seriously.” He continued by saying, “Well, they do. I’m sorry. That’s the way I see it. I’ve always felt mentally quite stable. Don’t feel like I need it.” He must have forgotten what he said in an interview at the PGA Championship 4 years earlier when he explained how he was using a golf psychologist to help him think a little bit clearer.

So Lee, if you aren’t using a golf psychologist, then perhaps you need one now. And if you are using one, maybe you need more help in that area.

So, taking my tongue firmly out of my cheek, I’ll move on quickly to Vijay Singh.

Vijay was majestic all through this year’s PGA Championship, as he almost always is, from tee to green. Sadly, trying lots of golf psychology tricks, doubtless including telling himself what a great putter he is, his putting was absolutely awful. In fact, if he’d putted in all four rounds as well as Tiger did on Sunday, he would have won by a street.

Now clearly Vijay is very strong psychologically and that shows through in his focus and belief in his long game. Any lesser mortal would be so overwhelmed by his psychological failure on the greens that they would lose their long game confidence as well. He’s also strong physically and we know how hard he works on his game. So why doesn’t someone help him to apply that psychological strength to his putting. I’m not a teaching pro and I can see that there’s nothing much physically wrong with his putting stroke, whichever length or style of putter he’s using.

So does Vijay make use of the services of a golf psychologist? Well, my research says yes. And it also says no! Yes, Vijay is a long term client of Dr Joseph Parent, the highly respected corporate speaker, PGA Tour instructor and best-selling author of “Zen Golf: Mastering the Mental Game.” He’s also often quoted in support of Dr Parent’s work.

On the other hand, in an interview at the 2009 Masters, when asked if he works with a sports psychologist, he responded “Not really. I can’t say I’ve actually worked with anyone.” He added, “I’ve worked with Joe Parent, who wrote Zen Golf, two or three years ago, but we kind of discussed – he probably learned some from me and I learned some from him. So it was kind of a give-and-take thing.”

I was also intrigued to find the marketing blurb about Dr Parent’s “Putting with Confidence” video and read the question, “Tired of missing short putts under pressure? Learn how to turn those “knee-knockers” into “tap ins” and never miss a three-footer again! Does your putting frustrate you?” I guess that Vijay ought to watch that video!

So far, the only golf psychology quote I’ve found from Vijay about putting suggests that he’s been using affirmations to convince himself that he’s the best putter. How exactly is that going to work when he consistently disproves that with his poor putting?

So what’s the solution for Lee Westwood and Vijay Singh? Normally, I’d recommend they see a golf psychologist. They already seem to be doing that and with highly respected and well qualified golf mind coaches. The problem appears to be that whatever they’re doing it’s not working automatically at the most critical time for these players. That means it’s not part of their unconscious habits and beliefs.

All three golf psychologists are very experienced with a wealth of wonderful golf psychology techniques to help their clients. So it looks to me like these clients are trying to implement the techniques consciously using will-power. If you’re a regular reader of my articles, you won’t be surprised to hear that I think that Lee and Vijay should be using hypnosis to install these ideas into their unconscious golf minds – as habits and beliefs.

Vijay Singh +500

Sergio Garcia +800

Phil Mickelson +1000

OK, the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup playoffs were a dud again this year.

That makes 0-for-2 in the drama department for the Tour’s postseason system that debuted in 2007. Last year, Tiger Woods had the FedEx Cup’s $10 million prize basically wrapped up by the time the Tour Championship rolled around. Most people expected a wide-open race in 2008 with Tiger sidelined by injury, but Vijay Singh put on a Tiger-esque performance by winning the first two playoff tournaments and only needs to not get disqualified this week to win the FedEx Cup.

So even though Singh technically has nothing to play for this week, you still have to count the hard-working Fijian as the favorite this week. He never takes a tournament off or for granted. No wonder Singh is the +450 WagerWeb.com favorite this week at East Lake in the smallest field (30 players) on Tour. He also has the advantage of being rested – Singh didn’t compete in last week’s draining Ryder Cup.

Singh credits his confidence with the putter for his recent surge this year.

“Just believing that stroking a putt is simpler than what I made it out to be,” he said. “I mean, for years and years I’ve been a very decent putter, a good putter for that matter. But I never really used that to my advantage. I just kind of took it for granted and when things started going bad, the negatives were very strong, a very strong thing.”

Singh leads the field in Tour Championship experience, playing in his 15th Tour Championship. He has finished no worse than fourth since the tournament moved permanently to the East Lake Golf Club in 2004. Ernie Els is next in experience, playing in his 13th tournament, with Phil Mickelson in the field for the 12th time in his career.

Of the 30 players in the field, 10 were members of the winning U.S. squad at last week’s Ryder Cup. They are Chad Campbell, Jim Furyk, Anthony Kim, Justin Leonard, Mickelson, Ben Curtis, Steve Stricker, Kenny Perry, Stewart Cink and Hunter Mahan. Furyk is the top favorite among the Americans at +750, while Kim was spectacular at the Ryder Cup and is +900 this week on WagerWeb.com.

Spain’s Sergio Garcia (+800 on WagerWeb.com) is the only member of the European Ryder Cup team to play in the Tour Championship, and he is the best of the returning players having finished fourth at East Lake last year.

Can Camilo Villegas give the FedEx Cup its second straight two-tournament victor? Villegas stopped Singh’s streak at the BMW Championship and is +1100 on WagerWeb.com

There are five past champions of the Tour Championship in the field. They are Billy Mayfair (1995), Mickelson (2000), Mike Weir (2001), Singh (2002) and Campbell (2003).

Interestingly enough, East Lake Country Club was rated the seventh-easiest course on the circuit last year with the 15th hole rated as the easiest of the PGA Tour’s 55 courses.

A Californian agency has been appointed by Adidas Golf to manage and execute all creative planning and implementation for its Adidas Golf range of apparel and eyewear. The agency which was established some 7 years ago also manages TaylorMade-Adidas Golf worldwide, Maxfli Golf and Rossa golf putters. Other accounts include the Duramed Futures Tour, the San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Two PGA players who are prominent in the world of golf have signed sponsorship contracts this year for a 5-year deal with Thomson Corporation, an information solutions provider. Mike Weir will be endorsed with Thomson logo on his personalised golf cap – no further details were provided; whilst Masters winner Zach Jonson has prolonged his sponsorship deal with golf apparel manufacturer Dunning Golf. Johnson will wear Dunning Golf branded golf clothes throughout all on-course tournaments, in all advertising and marketing activity – and participating in the development of the golf brands apparel system.

The PGA raised over $115m for charitable causes in 2007 – the most ever in the Tour’s long history. The amount is relative to all three PGA organisations, the PGA Tour, Nationwide Tour and Champions Tour. In what appeared to be a record year for charity donations from Golf organisations – the EDS Byron Nelson Championship beat the $99million goal post of all time donations to charity. The Valero Texas Open was the first golfing event in history to raise over $8-million in less than one year. Almost passing the $8-million mark – The FBR Open reported a donation of $7.8-million to good causes.

Adams Golf has recently announced the addition of two high profile PGA names to its line-up, in less than two weeks before contracting Tommy Gainey and Brad Elder – the golf equipment manufacturer has signed Sabbatini, Rory and Baddeley, Aaron.

A former Nike golf player and four times PGA Tour winner, ranked an amazing 11th in the world – has agreed to wear a branded golf cap and staff golf bag whilst using Idea golf irons, Idea Pro hybrid golf clubs junior golf clubs and an Insight golf driver. Having finished in sixth position on golf’s big earner’s list in 2007 after finding himself in the top 10 finishes at the FedEx cup events, and winning the Crowne Plaza Invitational.

Four times Tour winner and world ranking 18th golfer in the world, Baddeley was recently released from a signing with MacGregor last Autumn. Baddeley will sport an Adams golf cap and carry a tour golf bag, whilst using Insight 3 and 5-woods – additional Adams clubs will be introduced to his arsenal of junior left handed golf clubs throughout 2008 – Adams will contemplate adding its blade golf irons to its produce portfolio to align its corporate image with that of its latest signings and to inspire consumer confidence in the brand. Adams as a brand of golf equipment has been perceived as a junior / novice golfer’s brand, and not that of a brand for golfers.

Adams Golf has reportedly had talks with over 6 high profile PGA tour players before it closed deals with Rory Sabbatini and Aaron Baddeley – there is no immediate plan to further increase its pool of highly skilled player’s.
