How do I select the right golf clubs?

November 24, 2009 by admin

I’m a novice golfer, with a high handicap. My major problems are teeing off (contact inaccuracy and slicing) and using the low irons on the fairway. High irons, pitching, and putting are OK.

I am of above average strength for my height of 5’11″ and have a potential for long drives once I get my technique right. I weigh 200 lbs.

Should I get a driver with a bigger sweet-spot? How do I choose the correct length of the shaft(s), and what kind of materials would I benefit from?

    Sounds like you are inconsistent.

It’s hard to become a good golfer if you dont have a repeatable swing.

Invest in lessons first and talk to your instructor about the proper equipment. He or she will see your swing up close and help your determine which clubs are best for you.

get lessons from a PGA professional…that person will be able to help you with your mechanics and possibly direct you to resources for club purchases…make sure you get your swing analyzed before buying clubs, and make sure the clubs fit you…going to a reputed club repair/custom shop or a pro shop with a launch analyzer to check your swing characteristics will help you with selection, dont spend too much on your first set as your swing will probably change the most during the first year or so, after which you might be ready for a set you can stay with for longer (your instructor will also be able to let you know when too)…good luck!

What I would do, and what I did do, is not worry about clubs, but worry about how you swing them. Find a few drivers you like, go test them out, whichever one you feel is great with your swing and will result in a good shot should be the one you chose. Same with all your other clubs. Its also good to work your technique a lot so that the driver learns to fit you.

Have to agree with lessons first followed by lots of practice then a quality club fitting.

Your best bet is to get fitted for clubs. If you are willing to spend the money do it. You should go to one of your local golf shops and just hit a few irons and woods and see what feels the best for you. Once you find the clubs you like get fitted. Just a small amount of length in a club can make a huge impact. I also advise taking some lessons. You may not be consistent now, but after a few lessons you could change your mind and like the clubs you have.
