Golf Lessons From a Zen Master

When watching golf on television, one cannot help but wonder how men and women can make millions of dollars playing a game that looks so simple. Honestly, who can’t hit a ball into a hole with 4 or 5 tries? Ahh, but golf is another one of those “finer arts”, and it can take years and years of practice before you break par – let alone try for those birdie thingies! For people looking to get into the sport, golf lessons are probably the best way to go – unless you were raised on the greens like dear Tiger.

So, is there any real difference between instructors, or will anyone do?

Hey look, there are $7 an hour fry cooks at McDonald’s and $100,000 per year chefs – both can teach you how to cook, but the results you’ll experience will be far different. While a higher price does not always mean higher quality, it is a good rule of thumb to go by when looking for the “Zen Master” instructor for your golf lessons.

How do I choose an instructor?

As with almost any decision we make, the budget is always a factor. How much money can you afford? Are these golf lessons to help you meet clients, or are you just looking to learn how to play the game? If you really don’t like golf but know it would be a great business asset, then you will want a better instructor. After all, the golf lessons then become a business investment, correct? You will generally find the more experienced and sought-after instructors giving golf lessons at the higher end clubs and resorts. A Las Vegas golf lesson at the Walter’s Golf Academy might be given by Chuck Matlack, Mike Davis, or Jimmie Pollard – all of whom are seasoned pro’s with great portfolios – and with great rates to match!

Do I have to have private golf lessons, or are there other options?

Now that is a very good question. You can either receive golf lessons from an instructor in a one-on-one setting, or attend a “Golf School” where lessons are given in groups. Clearly, you will get more personalized golf lessons with a personal instructor, but the process can take months, and progress may be slow. But if you want to save some money and need a crash course, then golf lessons from one of the many available schools is the route to take.

What else should I know?

You should definitely know your own commitment level. Look – golf lessons are not cheap. Whatever you learn – be it from Jimmie Pollard during a Las Vegas golf lesson or at Greg’s Golf Shack – you will need to reinforce what you learn with practice. Otherwise, you are just wasting your money. So be sure that you really want to play the game, be it for business or pleasure, before deciding to take golf lessons.

As with anything else, you’ll want your golf instructor or school to be the best investment of both time and money possible. Therefore, don’t be afraid to ask for references, or even to interview the potential instructors before making a decision. After factoring in budget, instruction style, and your own commitment level, select the best golf lessons option for you and your needs. You’ll be glad you did.

Help answer the question about golf lesson

Help I have severe social anxiety and a fear of passing out and i have a golf lesson tommarow!?
The lesson is 30 minutes and i really don't like when the instructor grabs the club and tells me to be in a certain posture. I get really nervous, feel like passing out and am afraid that i can't tolerate it and i will just run away and make a fool of myself?

Any advice?

I was thinking if i get really uncomfortable i could ask to get a drink of water. That is only one break though. Ah man what if i have a panic attack?

It depends on how good the pro is at each locations. If the course is just a cheap public course, the pro probably isn't the best. If it is a country club or reputable public course those would be better places to get lessons. By taking them at a course you have the oportunity to use the driving range or putting green. At at golf store you can only hit into a net or a simulator.

  4. LOL, that is how I hold golf clubs too! ;)

  5. That is up to you and I doubt is expected. Did you get a good lesson ?
Would you hire 'em again ?
Never hurts but I don't think it is expected……

  6. You are afraid of being afraid and that only way to get around that is to get out there. Do it slowely but you still have to get out there. Prove to yourself that you won't have a panic attack.
The possibility that you will pass out is actually quite remote. If he grabs the club, let go. Or talk to him before class and explain your situation. Remember to breathe deep and slow and tell yourself to calm down and relax.

it depends on how you play and what the instructor expects of you. I am going to guess that it will take atleast til June… because you have to make sure your alignment is good (might be part of the problem) and that you are hitting the ball correctly.
no one can really answer that question until after about 2-3 lessons. you need to make sure you are practicing what your instructor tells you to practice at home.
it is hard to take lessons once you have already played because… you have to get used to a new swing and everything.
just practice what he/she tells you and hopefully it won't be too long :) although, you may want to stick with them just to make sure that you are doing everything correctly once you are hitting in the 80's. i personally love my private golf lessons.. but thats just me :)
    good luck and have fun!!

Try contacting a few of your local golf courses and pro shops.

They may either have free/low-cost classes or be able to direct you to someone who does.

    Hope this helps!

if you go to a golfsmith store, some have GolfTec inside and they give lessons with video analysis and all kinds of high tech stuff. theres one in paramus. thats about $85 a lesson. you can also try darlington golf course and driving range in Mahwah, you can get 5 half hour lessons for $250.

Most of the people who go to these types of schools do it for the experience rather than the value. They go to say "I went to Dave Pelz's school." It's kind of like those baseball fantasy camps where a bunch of Hall of Fame players "teach" you to play better, but you're really going for the experience of getting to rub elbows with the guys running the thing.

If you're looking for the best value to improve your game, find a local private instructor and get long term lessons so that he can continually help you improve rather than a 2 day clinic from a bunch of people you'll never see again.

They probably do not expect it but consider the totatlity of the lesson before you decide to tip or not.

I got to an instructor who, while many times is running late, is a wonderful teacher. He has helped me a great deal – as a teacher is supposed to, but his lesson NEVER is just 30 minutes. It is generally 40 -60 minutes and then he always ends by saying to stay as long as I want and hit balls.

In my opinion, I think those efforts are worth a tip.

There have been times when it has been just a 1/2 hour because I have had to go for some reason or another and those times I have not tipped.

Oh yeah, he charges $40.00 per 30 minute lesson and I might tip $5 or $10
