Golf Mental Game: Specific Thinking

golf_mental_gameThe game of golf entails more than just hitting a small ball through the grass in the hopes of it landing in a hole. There is much more to the game including taking in environmental factors such as the slope of the green, the weather, and the amount of water on the grass. Professional golfers notice all these elements and take them into consideration before they take their shot. If you are serious about becoming a good golfer, you need to remember that this will not happen overnight. You need to build keen observation skills, build up patience, and understand that no matter how hard you try, not every shot will be your best.

Even though many professional golfers look like they are having a good time on the course and not taking themselves too seriously, the reality is that they are concentrating very hard on making the right shot. Playing golf with other professionals only adds to the tension, but once a golfer blocks these negative feelings out, they are able to concentrate on the task at hand. In order to become a better golfer, you will have to learn how to block tension, stress, and negativity out and focus on the game. Only then will you begin to improve.

The best time to practice letting go of negative feelings and learning how to relax is when you are learning how to golf. By learning the basics, you will have a foundation that you can build on each time you go out to play a round. If you are receiving lessons from an instructor, ask them what they do to relax. Many will tell you that they clear their minds or they think of something pleasant. Either way, it is up to you to find a way to help yourself focus when playing golf.

Once you have learned how to reduce stress during the game, your next step will be to learn how to better your technique. This is where the real work comes in. Practicing at least twice a week can help you become a better golfer. Strengthening your reasoning, observation, and listening skills can help you develop your own unique style. Those who are able to play golf the way they want to play will have much more success on the course. You may even notice that some of these principles will transfer to other areas of your life as well.

As a golfer who carries a 1.6 handicap and shoots around par, I have 3 things that I feel you need to work on in order to improve your golf swing technique and start playing good golf in a short amount of time.

    1. The first thing is to focus on a good grip. This is crucial because it is your only link to the golf club. You want two knuckles showing on the left hand (If you are right handed) and you want to make sure that your grip pressure is light. Gripping the club hard causes tension, which is not good for the golf swing.

    2. The second thing that you should work on is your stance and backswing. Make sure that you have a good posture, and that you set up to the ball "like an athelete." This will help you a lot to improve your golf swing technique. You should start your backswing by letting your hands, arms, and shoulders move away from the ball at the same time.

    3. The third thing is to start your downsing by rotating, not swaying your front hip toward the ball. This will increase your power and accuracy. Just make sure that you do not start the downswing with your hands, as this is a big no no!

You may want to look at quality golf training manual to get you started with a good golf swing technique. I know this helped me out: http://swing-a-golf-club.blogspot.com

It is very easy to summarize the rules of golf:

    1. Play the ball as it lies.
    2. Play the course as you find it.
    3. The player is responsible for everything that happens.

The tough part is understanding how to apply those principles correctly in every situation, and knowing what to do when you are in a spot where you can't do them.

If you go the library or bookstore, you will find dozens and dozens of books on golf techniques and strategies. It would be impossible to summarize them here.

To learn the history of golf, you can read a book. I know that sounds weird, but that's why people write books. You can even do a web search for "golf history". You might actually learn something on your own.
