OK, the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup playoffs were a dud again this year.

That makes 0-for-2 in the drama department for the Tour’s postseason system that debuted in 2007. Last year, Tiger Woods had the FedEx Cup’s $10 million prize basically wrapped up by the time the Tour Championship rolled around. Most people expected a wide-open race in 2008 with Tiger sidelined by injury, but Vijay Singh put on a Tiger-esque performance by winning the first two playoff tournaments and only needs to not get disqualified this week to win the FedEx Cup.

So even though Singh technically has nothing to play for this week, you still have to count the hard-working Fijian as the favorite this week. He never takes a tournament off or for granted. No wonder Singh is the +450 WagerWeb.com favorite this week at East Lake in the smallest field (30 players) on Tour. He also has the advantage of being rested – Singh didn’t compete in last week’s draining Ryder Cup.

Singh credits his confidence with the putter for his recent surge this year.

“Just believing that stroking a putt is simpler than what I made it out to be,” he said. “I mean, for years and years I’ve been a very decent putter, a good putter for that matter. But I never really used that to my advantage. I just kind of took it for granted and when things started going bad, the negatives were very strong, a very strong thing.”

Singh leads the field in Tour Championship experience, playing in his 15th Tour Championship. He has finished no worse than fourth since the tournament moved permanently to the East Lake Golf Club in 2004. Ernie Els is next in experience, playing in his 13th tournament, with Phil Mickelson in the field for the 12th time in his career.

Of the 30 players in the field, 10 were members of the winning U.S. squad at last week’s Ryder Cup. They are Chad Campbell, Jim Furyk, Anthony Kim, Justin Leonard, Mickelson, Ben Curtis, Steve Stricker, Kenny Perry, Stewart Cink and Hunter Mahan. Furyk is the top favorite among the Americans at +750, while Kim was spectacular at the Ryder Cup and is +900 this week on WagerWeb.com.

Spain’s Sergio Garcia (+800 on WagerWeb.com) is the only member of the European Ryder Cup team to play in the Tour Championship, and he is the best of the returning players having finished fourth at East Lake last year.

A Californian agency has been appointed by Adidas Golf to manage and execute all creative planning and implementation for its Adidas Golf range of apparel and eyewear. The agency which was established some 7 years ago also manages TaylorMade-Adidas Golf worldwide, Maxfli Golf and Rossa golf putters. Other accounts include the Duramed Futures Tour, the San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Two PGA players who are prominent in the world of golf have signed sponsorship contracts this year for a 5-year deal with Thomson Corporation, an information solutions provider. Mike Weir will be endorsed with Thomson logo on his personalised golf cap – no further details were provided; whilst Masters winner Zach Jonson has prolonged his sponsorship deal with golf apparel manufacturer Dunning Golf. Johnson will wear Dunning Golf branded golf clothes throughout all on-course tournaments, in all advertising and marketing activity – and participating in the development of the golf brands apparel system.

The PGA raised over $115m for charitable causes in 2007 – the most ever in the Tour’s long history. The amount is relative to all three PGA organisations, the PGA Tour, Nationwide Tour and Champions Tour. In what appeared to be a record year for charity donations from Golf organisations – the EDS Byron Nelson Championship beat the $99million goal post of all time donations to charity. The Valero Texas Open was the first golfing event in history to raise over $8-million in less than one year. The PGA Championship or the “Glory’s last shot” as it is also known, took part last week at the Medinah Country Club in Chicago. This official money event on both the PGA TOUR and the European Tour, offered this year a purse of $6.8 million and for all the golf fans, we got some of the best golf players in the world showing us what they’re made of.

For most golf followers, the PGA Champion ended up being the Ali of golf. But for some of the fans that followed the tournament these four days, golfers Mike Weir and Luke Donald seemed to be on a roll for the first place.

If Eldrick T. Woods wouldn’t have been in the tournament I also would’ve expected one of this two to be the winners, especially after a 72 on Thursday, a 67 on Friday and the astounding 65 on Saturday Weir was an excellent opponent and of course Luke was another favorite since he tied with Tiger.

The first pairing of Tiger Woods and Luke Donald, on Sunday, caught all the attention, event that helped Weir. The 4- and 5- under round of Mike’s gave the impression that he had a plus of having a second major victory on his career.

But on the other hand Woods was 11-0, leading after 54 holes, tied with Donald and with a two-stroke advantage. This showed us how hard was for any other player to steal the victory from the master Tiger Woods; a victory that also escaped from Weir during the 99′s tournament.

Tiger had complete control during the game, began with a birdie and shot a 4- under 68. He just had a bogey at the No.17th hole, when it was already obvious that he was the winner. Meanwhile Weir made a bogey on the 11th hole, finishing the day at 11 under, leaving fans perplexed for the change on his course.

Luke Donald and his fans were also expecting a different result and they all had the hope of watching Tiger make a couple of bogeys that would’ve given Donald the chance to take the leading title from his opponent.

This 51st PGA Championship was Tiger’s third consecutive victory. With which he also tied the record, 18-under, with Bob May for the PGA Tour. The first winner of a PGA Championship, Jim Barnes, received $500 in 1916, while Tiger Woods received $1.224 million last Sunday.

When you know how much preparation and love Woods had during his life for golf, is comprehensive how can he be so great at it. This 31-year-old amazing player always had the passion for this sport, since he was six-month-old he used to mimic his father.

Even many of his opponents had accepted to feel useless to play in a tournament with Tiger after watching him play. I hope we get to see more of him for more time, because when he is on the field for sure we’ll see the best of every player that join him.

The PGA tour is heating up now, except for Mr. Woods, and there are some new faces out there trying to make their mark on the tour. One of those rookies is a former Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year, Webb Simpson.

Simpson has started hotter than any rookie so far this season. The Wake Forest grad started with a tie for fifth at the Sony Open and followed that with a tie for ninth at the Hope. He was in the mix early at the FBR Open but fell back on the weekend. He currently stands in seventeenth place on the PGA money list, the highest ranking rookie. Simpson is a former All-American and was on the winning 2007 Walker Cup Team at Royal County Down in Northern Ireland. Simpson has made the transition from the amateur ranks to the pro game look easy with an All Around ranking of thirteenth on tour.

Haas: I have told this to many people. He came here highly touted, he was a Junior All-American. He’s a better person then he is a player. It’s hard to imagine. He just kind of gets it. He is good with people, he has a good personality. He is probably the most honest player I’ve ever had…in the fact that he never had an excuse for a bad shot or a bad round.

LLG: What do you think his personal strengths are?

Haas: He is very well grounded. It comes from his family….he always takes full responsibility.

LLG: What is the best part of his game?

Haas: His short game. He chips and putts unbelievably. He did it a lot in junior golf with smoke and mirrors…he would shoot good scores but, he would squeeze everything out of it…like “How did he shoot that score”…He is one of those rare kids, as he started hitting it better he still chipped and putted like he did. Sometimes a guy will start hitting it great and then all of a sudden he doesn’t putt as well….That’s why he can shoot low scores and make a lot of birdies. Read more.

For the second consecutive year the Island of Bermuda will host one of the most exclusive golf tournaments since it receives the winners of the sport’s four major tournaments: Masters, U.S. Open, PGA Championship and the British Open. The best golf players of the world will face each other in the PGA Grand Slam final, a 36 whole stroke play event with a 1.35 million price.

The tournament that began in 1979 has been hosted in New York, Minnesota, Florida, Illinois, California and finally Hawaii where it has stayed for the past 12 years before moving outside the US to Mid Ocean Club in the Island of Bermuda last year.

Since sports play an integral role in the country’s development, the Island of Bermuda’s golfers and its business community, mostly known for being a dream destination, are obviously motivated about the PGA Grand Slam of Golf’s to be hosted in their country in 2008. Nevertheless the selection is definitely not casual; the Mid Ocean Club in Bermudas has been ranked in the #45 position by Golf Digest for courses outside the United States and last year Grand Slam was more than successful.

The tournament is considered as one of the most important in golf and it is televised to a worldwide audience (100 countries) by TNT and Golf Channel, which means an economic shot for the host country. Actually, this year winner (Angel Cabrera) received $600,000 while second, third and fourth places got $300,000, $250,000, $200,000 respectively. However, the prize money did not counted towards the PGA Tour money list.

Getting a spot in the Grand Slam is not an easy task. The field is typically reserved to the year’s four major champions. Past winners include: Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, Ernie Els, Tom Lehman, Ben Crenshaw, Greg Norman, Nick Price and Ian Woosnam.

The famous Tiger Woods, seven times winner of the Grand Slam was absent of this year tournament due to the recent birth of his daughter. Even thought, the event attracted around 7,000 golf fans. Hopefully, we all will be able to see the golf star next year at Mid Ocean Club. However, Bermudas is now set as a world class golf destination, and the dream of growing through the sport seems to turn into reality for the Island.

PGA Golf Counter:  A less expensive option to the golf watch mentioned in part one.  This device will keep score for up to four players.  It will allow your customers to concentrate on their game and not the score.

Golf Long Game Lesson #12 – Is my Driver Legal

Help answer the question about golf lesson

Also, the clubs I have are 20 years old but barely used. The bag, however, is leather, has no stand, and is extremely heavy even tho it's in excellent condition. Should I invest in a new, lightweight stand bag, and if so, where can I buy a decent long-lasting one that won't cost too much?
